Mr. Bülent Bektaş who had visited the firm Motobecane during his trip to Paris,
proposed manufacturing and assembling the Mobylette brand motorcycles (moped) in Turkey.

Being considered as beneficial, a technical know-how agreement for moped manufacturing was signed with the said company, and during a meeting held on March 9, 1966, it was decided to establish a new company, namely Beldesan Motorlu Vasıtalar Sanayii A.Ş., which would also manufacture spark plugs as well.

Foundation of the factory was laid on 29-04-1966 on the 10.400 sq.m. land purchased at İstinye, next to the Kavel factory. In August 1967 Mobylette was launched into market. Following a short period, manufacture of bicycles was on stream, but it was quitted in 1969 in favour of Standard Belde, who continued the business.

The rising trend of moped sales suddenly came to a stand still in 1970 due to the applied expense tax and the vehicle purchase tax, the latter of which was deleted later. As a result of the measures taken, moped sales showed an increasing trend from 1972 up to mid 1978, at which time showed signs of staggering due to increased prices as a consequence of increased inflation.

In order to eliminate the difficulties arising from the January 24th 1980 regulations that switched the economical conditions from inflationist to deflationist economy, the main distributorship of Motor Ticaret A.Ş. for moped sales was deleted and Beko A.Ş. was appointed instead. The product range and marketing methods were reviewed and necessary steps were taken to meet the requirements of a new and severely competitive market.

A second motor type was manufactured for Mobylette in order to develop a sports model. Taking into consideration the interest shown for the new model, a product range consisting of 6 models which included the innovations of the European standards, was developed and the sales trend was increased again. Integration investments were focused to control the costs and the most costly investment of the company, namely crankshaft - connecting rod group project, was completed at the beginning of 1985. On the other hand, after sales services were given priority and a network of maintenance services were established all over the country and spare parts distribution was facilitated as well.

However, with the new traffic law dated 1983 and came into force in mid 1985, requiring Licence for Mobylette drivers primarily created a shock effect and was a turning point in moped business.

Depending on the differences in application, the issue of driving licence continues to affect the sales from time to time.

As a consequence of Bebimot A.Ş.'s merge with Beldesan in 1986, manufacture and sales of bicycles attained the same trend as moped sales with Beldesan - Beko cooperation. At this period, quality was emphasised under a requisite perspective including the causes of substantial freedom of two - wheeled vehicle importation and cost reduction

As of 1983, with more active foreign trade policy of Turkey, motorcycle as an essential product of two-wheeled vehicle series, started gaining importance, and specially with the cheaper priced products imported from Iron Curtain countries where State owned works did not reflect the actual cost in export prices, gained a considerable market share.

During that period of time, just like other renown motorcycle manufacturers, Yamaha signed a distributorship agreement with Tatiş at İzmir for motorcycle and its parts. However, because of various reasons, this cooperation did not yield the expected outcome.

On the other hand, MBK, the firm that held the licence for manufacture of moped, being eventually purchased by Yamaha, and the events that arose in exporting parts to this firm by Beldesan, created an affinity between Beldesan and Yamaha. Consequently with the purchase of Tatiş stocks in 1994, a distributorship agreement was signed by the two firms and this, in time, led to an industrial cooperation.

In conjunction with the commercial relations, the idea of establishing a new firm that would undertake the manufacture of moped - bicycle - motorcycle and their parts reached to the point of realization after several negotiations and visits. Thus, with 80% Beldeyama and 20% Yamaha partnership, Beldeyama Motorlu Vasıtalar Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. was established and registered on 14-04-1997.
